Night Photos!
Took some photos a couple nights back with my beautiful bride, take a peak!

New work.
Just finishing printing up a proof for my job and wanted to let you know how things are going. I’ve enjoyed the 10 or so hours creating graphics for the Division of Criminology and Criminal Justice at PSU. My boss is great to work with, essentially letting me do my thing and giving me space to work. What’s really nice about this job is that I’m taking a course right now in Digital Page Layout, which could very easily be my job title. I’m able to put all the little tips and tricks I’m learning in class to work and I get paid for it.
Today, or yesterday I suppose, I interviewed for a photography position with the PSU Daily Vanguard. This is a student run newspaper. I got to take a look at the cameras I would be using and got pretty excited. There was a gorgeous lens in there that would be so amazing to work with. So send some good vibes and prayers my way.
I’m also working with a clothing company creating t-shirt graphics and am really looking forward to see where that potentially takes me. The company is called PBRack. The owner is a young guy named Tom, super cool guy by the way, who graduated high school when he was 15 and became a pro paintballer. So somehow he developed this idea for a clothing line (the PB stands for Paintball) and now he’s got his stuff in a couple shops in Europe and a handfull here in the states. These are too quick ideas I came up with:

I also finished up with my friend Kyle’s cd cover. Turned out ridiculously awesome, I was super happy with the artwork. And the cd itself, audio-wise, is absolutely incredible. This guy is going places and I made him sign a contract stating that if/when he gets famous he has to pay me 75% of all his proceeds, so I’m set.
Here’s to hoping I do a better job of keeping this guy updated.

New Jobs.
I just recently got a new job and also a lot of potential freelance work.
First the new job. It’s a graphic design position with the Criminology and Criminal Justice Program at Portland State. I’ll be creating brochures and other print materials as well as a small amount of web layout work. I’m super excited about the opportunity to work for the University and potentially get my name out there.
The potential freelance work is for a clothing company called PBRack. They sell t-shirts, board shorts, that type of stuff. I’m excited to create t-shirt graphics and see them in stores, how cool would that be?
So that’s the quick update, off to work on some school work.

iPhone!
I am writing the post from the comfort of my bed. I am also writing this post on my brand spanking new iPhone 3g, with a beautiful white back.
I’ve owned some neat gadgets in the past, but none as polished and nice as this. It’s amazing what this one piece of technology can do. When I finish this I can check my bank statement, order the new Cool Hand Luke album, and upload pictures to flickr that have been tagged with the exact location they taken at. It is truly an amazing device. And it recieves phone calls too!
work & school.
I can’t wait to be a student again. I’m very much looking forward to starting school on Monday at PSU, looking forward to being somewhere new with my wife, meeting new people, seeing new places. I’m also very excited to be done working at a 9-5 for a bit also. I really hope I continue to get more freelance clients so that I can support Britt and myself that way, but I may have to get a job on campus or something. Either way we’re so excited to move, our apartment is full of stacked boxes and piles of things that need to be packed. I’ll post pictures Sunday or Monday once we get settled in Portland.
current projects and things on my mind.
I have a couple things on my mind at this moment.
First and foremost is the fact that my wife and I are moving in less than a week. Less than a week, which means on Saturday, which means soon. It’s slightly stressful, very exciting, and a little bit tiring.
I have a fair amount of freelance projects that are starting to pile up. Which is stressful. I love the fact that I have clients, I hate the fact that I don’t have enough time in the day right now to pack, create sketches, finalize projects, make moving arrangements, so on and so forth. I’m very much looking forward to quitting my 8-5 with an hour lunch break and taking up school again, and when I say very much I’m understating it.
It’s ridiculously nice out right now and I want to go on a bike ride.
And a couple recent design projects (descriptions under photos):

This is a bible study cover I just finished up for Salem Alliance. Really happy with how it turned out. My wonderful helper and wife Brittany was more than willing to do a little research for this one and helped me write out all the names on name tag stickers.

This is more than likely going to be the final graphic for the album cover that I’ve been working on. My buddy Kyle informed me that the title of the album is going to be “If you aint got a voice…” We collaborated on what type of imagery would work with that title and thought a piece of duct tape over the mouth would work well. The final final piece will be posted when I get it finished up sometime this week.

And a logo I’ve been working on for a bit now. My new client and friend Melissa from Concordia church in San Diego has been nothing but helpful and kind, definitely an ideal person to work with.
polaroid film and the end of humanity.
Came across this article today on AIGA. It’s an interesting look at the era of Polaroid film started in 1947, when the first instant camera, named the Polaroid Land Camera Model 95, was introduced. Invented by Edwin Land (Land camera, get it?) who founded the Polaroid company in 1937. Polaroid interestingly enough started out offering polarized sunglasses.
What’s so amusing to me about this is that Polaroid is ditching instant film for digital photography. Which when you think about it doesn’t offer the instant satisfaction of a physical image mere seconds after you take the picture (I realize that it usually takes around a minute for the picture to fully develop, but you know what I mean).
This also touches on a broader idea that has been taking up precious space in my brain lately. I get scared the further away we get from physical things, things you can hold and touch and smell and feel. We have mp3’s (I don’t think I’ve purchased an actual CD in over a year), e-books, digital photo albums. I read a comic awhile back called The Surrogates. Amazing comic, I loved the artwork, the dialogue, the story. But according to this book the future is a lonely place where we all have “Surrogates”, or cyborgs, robots, that we control from home. Humans are no longer leaving their houses, they “plug in” and go about their day as a robot.
Does that not terrify you? And although small, I feel that things like no more instant film, and downloadable music, and movies over the internet, and electronic books, they are the starting point.
new computer.
Just went and got a mac today. It’s gorgeous. I’m in love. The tips of my fingers and my toes are tingling. I have stars in my eyes and my heart is beating out of my chest. Honestly this is the most excited I’ve been about anything “thing” ever. There are several people in my life that are infinitely more important than any “thing” I’ll ever own, but goodness gracious is this piece of equipment beautiful. It came with an iPod touch and a printer. Printers are a dime a dozen, but this iPod touch is a thing of beauty. It’s sleek and stylish, I can check my email on it, look at some funny youtube videos of kids being attacked by cats, and listen to my favorite band. Plus I can do all this just by pushing on the screen. It’s amazing! And here is an obligatory picture of the sweet setup, which I’m just about to take…
